A recent survey from the Pew Research Center has revealed that a growing number of young Americans are using the video-sharing platform TikTok as their main source of news. The Chinese app has grown incredibly popular over the past few years, particularly among young internet users, and is one of the most downloaded mobile applications on the globe.
While users were initially drawn to TikTok due to its many viral video clips, many of them are now relying on TikTok for news. The Pew Research report found that 17% of adults in the United States get their daily news from TikTok compared to only 3% in 2020. Pew Research scientists polled 10,658 American adults from the July 15–Aug. 4, 2024, to determine exactly how much of the population used TikTok as their main news source.
The pool of participants comprised members of Pew Research’s American Trends Panel (ATP) and had a diverse mix of ethnicity, gender, partisan affiliation and gender. Participants answered questions about how often they got news from sources such as print publications, radio, television or personal electronic devices, including tablets, computers and smartphones.
The survey also queried participants on whether they get news online using social-media platforms as well as social-media applications they prefer for news headlines. TikTok turned out to be especially popular among young social media users, as a whopping 63% of the respondents who used the video-sharing app were young adults. Furthermore, 30% of the Americans who took the poll noted that they regularly use TikTok as a news source.
On the other hand, 19% of respondents aged 30–49 years of age reported getting news from TikTok, 9% of adults aged 50–64 years of age used the platform to get news, and only 3% of adults aged 65 years of age and older used TikTok as a news source. The survey’s results are indicative of a major shift in how Americans choose to consume the news, especially among younger adults who are more likely to use social media, mobile phones and laptops to get news over TV and radio.
Pew Research also reports that the portion of TikTok users using the platform for news has also grown from 22% in 2022 to 43% last year and 52% this year. TikTok users are also much more likely to use the video-sharing app as a news source compared to Facebook users, but now, as many as X users use the recently controversial platform for news.
This developing trend is likely to give companies such as Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) something to think about as they draw up their strategic plans geared at attracting different demographics in their target markets.
