Experts Explain How Online Dating Has Evolved, How to Cope

Online dating has come quite a long way from the early internet chatrooms that allowed people to connect with folks outside their usual circles. But although millions of people worldwide have made meaningful connections via platforms like Match.com, Tinder, and Bumble, dating sites have become increasingly frustrating to use for people seeking meaningful connections. Dating experts have weighed in on how people can cope with the constantly evolving online dating space.

‘A Little Nudge’ founder and online dating expert Erika Ettin acknowledges that online dating has become a lot more challenging in recent years amidst ghosting, communication issues, seemingly overwhelming choices, and even insecurity. Ettin notes that while dating apps and websites have made notable technological advancements, their rising popularity made individual members of its growing user base more anonymous and increased their odds of engaging in behaviors such as ghosting.

Her sentiments are shared by many modern dating app users who say their hopes of building meaningful relationships on dating apps have been declining for quite a while. Relationship expert and love coach Michaela Lambert says that connecting with matches on online dating platforms seemed easier when she began using these platforms in the early 2010s. She explains that this is partly because it was easier to search and filter for potential matches on early dating platforms.

However, this has become incredibly difficult these days thanks to evolving relationship norms, algorithms, and paid subscriptions. Post-coronavirus anxieties were responsible for the shift in relationship norms that is still affecting the dating scene to this day. Relationship coach and ‘Single to Couple’ founder Mila Smith says that even though modern online dating allows people access to more choices than they’ve ever had, it has also created lots of confusion.

With so much to choose from, some people struggle to decide on a single match as they assume that there could be an even better match out there. The result is a widespread increase in swiping through multitudes of profiles which, in turn, has contributed to poor dating experiences and patterns. The average online dating app user will swipe through hundreds of profiles before finding one they like. Even then, poor communication and ghosting mean most of these matches rarely lead to something concrete.

According to experts, people can use strategies designed to boost confidence and self-awareness to combat increasing levels of negativity on online dating platforms. For instance, Lambert says outlining your values and what you want from your relationships will make it easier for you to recognize potential partners, make healthier connections, and build more meaningful relationships.

Players in the online dating space, such as Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) have plenty to do to ensure that the users of their platforms get a positive experience.
