Dating Apps to Unveil AI Features to Enable Users Find Partners

Dating apps are set to unveil new artificial intelligence (AI) features designed to help users find their perfect matches. Match Group, the company behind online dating apps like Tinder is getting ready to launch these features amidst a notable decline in the number of people who use dating apps.

These new AI features will reportedly help users avoid the endless swiping that’s endemic to dating apps and find love with more ease by tailoring user-profiles and searches to increase the likelihood of dates. However, some critics fear that introducing AI into online dating could jeopardize genuine connections between users.

Dating apps have been an incredibly popular means of meeting new partners for well over a decade and have facilitated connections between people who may never have met in public. However, there is mounting evidence that people are getting disillusioned and fatigued with dating apps and increasingly preferring in-person meetings. Recent data also suggests a significant decline in dating app use among the age groups that typically make up the bulk of dating app users.

Tinder parent company Match Group says its new but still unnamed AI-powered assistant will ‘transform’ the struggling online dating industry. Launching in March 2025, the AI assistant will carry out tasks such as choosing user photos with the highest mathematical likelihood of getting responses as well as recommending which information and prompts users should put on their dating profiles.

Furthermore, the AI assistant will help users choose the most suitable partners, Match Group says. According to the tech firm, users will go through a spoken interview with the AI to lay out their expectations on the dating app. Once they match with compatible users, the assistant will use interests to provide message suggestions.

According to Match Group, struggling users will also receive ‘effective coaching’ from the AI assistant. Users who struggle to get matches will receive tips on how to make their profiles more attractive, the tech firm says, to increase their chances of finding love.

Match Group chief executive Bernard Kim said that the company’s decision to focus on artificial intelligence heralds a new ‘AI Transformation’ phase for Match Group. Kim noted that AI has the potential to revolutionize dating and said the company will incorporate AI tools into all its products.

These tools will influence ‘literally everything,’ he says, from creating profiles to matching with potential partners and making connections for dates. On the other hand, some experts fear this could increase dependency on technology. If people rely on AI to make conversation for them, International Ethical Dating Online project member and University of Tartu junior research fellow Anastasiia Babash, a PhD says, they could lose the ability to take part in spontaneous, real life conversations.

The declining numbers of people using dating apps gives industry players like Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) a task of going back to the drawing board and finding new ways to attract and retain users. Integrating AI features is one approach they are considering. It remains to be seen whether this will have the desired impact.
