Alibaba Cloud Will Deploy AI-Backed Multicamera Replay System During Paris Olympics

Alibaba Cloud has revealed that its artificial Intelligence-enhanced, multicamera replay service will be deployed during the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The cloud unit teamed up with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) to test the AI-enhanced camera system during the Olympic Qualifier Series held in Shanghai last month.

Once the games begin, Alibaba Cloud’s camera system is set to form the backbone of broadcasting and will use advanced algorithms to provide a new type of Olympic viewing experience for spectators. The system uses deep neural networks alongside machine learning to provide “dynamic, multiangle views” of the Olympic games. Strategically placed cameras will capture footage and feed that footage to the cloud-based system, which will leverage its robust computing infrastructure to generate high-def 3D models.

More specifically, Alibaba Cloud’s system uses specialized video processing in both cloud and edge environments to process strategically captured footage and generate high-quality texture, cloud-based 3D models. This will allow OBS to create virtual frames of critical moments from different angles with smooth and realistic actions, providing spectators with immersive three-dimensional reconstruction of intense moments.

The result is a broadcasting system that can give spectators an immersive viewing experience through realistic and incredibly smooth action replays. If the technology is successfully implemented during the Olympic Games, arguably the largest sports event on the globe, it could change how sports events are broadcast in the future. Selina Yuan, Alibaba Cloud intelligence president of international business, said that Alibaba Cloud plans to use its experience in the novel intelligent sports solutions segment in its partnership with OBS to “redefine” how sports fans “experience and engage” with the Olympics.

Alibaba Cloud’s first major deployment of the AI-enhanced broadcasting system was at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing where it allowed sports enthusiasts to experience immersive coverage of the speed skating and curling events. The 2022 Beijing Olympics used the technology in only two events, but this year’s games will step it up and use the system to broadcast 12 events including rugby, tennis, judo and beach volleyball. Olympic Broadcasting Services will integrate Alibaba Cloud’s AI-enhanced broadcasting technology into its production system to provide media rights holders across the globe with enhanced replay footage.

The International Olympic Committee tapped Alibaba Cloud, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA)‘s cloud computing division, as its official cloud service provider, and the Chinese company is set on providing novel, unforgettable viewing experiences during the upcoming Paris Games and ultimately revolutionizing  sports broadcasting globally.
